Forex Week in Review – July 11, 2011

Last week saw US and Japanese markets moving forward whilst Europe stagnated or retreated. In Europe over the course of the week, the FTSE stood still gaining just 0.01%, closing at 5990.6; the Dax dipped by 0.23% to close at 7402.7; the CAC weakened by 2.3% to end the session at 3913.6.

The Dow ended the week up by 0.73% finishing the trading session at 12675.2. The Nasdaq ended the week up by 1.6% to close at 2859.8.

The Nikkei rose over the course of the week, gaining 2% to end the trading session at 10069.5, breaching the 10000 point barrier for the first time since the earthquake and tsunami struck on 11th March.

On the currency markets last week, the Dollar had the best of the trading by the time my reference data was generated (this was before disappointing US employment details were released).

Two Baltimore Bail Bondsmen Found Taxes to be the Least of Their Problems

Many businesses require licenses. In Maryland, you need a license to be a bail bondsmen (I suspect you do in most states). One of the rules in Maryland is that you can’t be a convicted felon if you’re a bail bondsmen.

Milton Tillman Jr. and his son, Milton Tillman III, had a problem. The elder Tillman had a felony conviction, and they were the owners of Four Aces Bail Bonds in Baltimore. Obama: Social Security Checks ‘Not Guaranteed’

President Obama issued a broadside Tuesday in the debt ceiling debate, saying in a high-profile interview that he cannot ensure government benefits — including Social Security — will be paid if Congress fails to act.

“I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven’t resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it,” Obama told CBS News.

This is not the first time the administration has warned that Social Security benefits are on the line. But it is the first time Obama has addressed the issue so pointedly.

U.S. Trade Deficit Narrows in February

April exports of $175.6 billion and imports of $219.2 billion resulted in a goods and services deficit of $43.7 billion, down from $46.8 billion in March, revised. April exports were $2.2 billion more than March exports of $173.4 billion. April imports were $1.0 billion less than March imports of $220.2 billion.

The March to April increase in exports of goods reflected increases in industrial supplies and materials ($2.0 billion); capital goods ($1.2 billion); and consumer goods ($0.3 billion). Read more info…
